Staithes and Whitby RNLI lifeboats were launched on Monday morning after a Whitby fishing boat got its propeller and rudder fouled in a rope off Kettleness near Runswick Bay.

The skipper of ‘Deep Harmony’ called Humber Coastguard to report that the 30 foot boat was unable to use its propeller after picking up a rope in it. The coastguard requested the launch of Staithes lifeboat at 8:15am and the volunteer crew were alongside ‘Deep Harmony’ by 8:35am.

The lifeboat crew passed a tow rope to the fishing boat and began towing it to Whitby but because the vessel’s rudder was also jammed it was proving difficult to tow in a straight line. Whitby’s all-weather lifeboat was launched shortly before 9:00am to assist in the tow and all three vessels arrived safely in Whitby harbour at 10:15am.
