Lifeboat Tows Yacht from Danger

Staithes RNLI lifeboat launched at 10:10am on Saturday morning to assist a disabled yacht that was close to the shore off Staithes.

The yacht’s skipper had contacted Humber Coastguard to report that he had no electrical power and could not start his engine or hoist his sails. With an onshore wind and danger of the yacht blowing ashore the coastguard requested the launch of Staithes and Whitby lifeboats.

Staithes lifeboat reached the 30 foot vessel, with six people onboard, within seven minutes of them being called and quickly passed a tow-line and pulled the yacht further offshore and started to head towards Whitby. The tow was transferred to Whitby lifeboat off Port Mulgrave at around 10:50am and the yacht was safely taken to Whitby harbour.

“The skipper did the right thing by deploying his anchor to stop him drifting ashore and calling the coastguard to ask for help. The lifeboat station manager noticed the yacht and was about to get some binoculars when the coastguard paged the crew.”.

— Lee Jackson, a Staithes Lifeboat Helmsman

Staithes lifeboat returned to station at 11:15am.
