Rescue: 26 August 2007,
Lady Doreen & Magnet 011-07
Two Shouts for the Price of One.

Staithes & Runswick RNLI lifeboat was launched at 1:45pm on Sunday afternoon after Humber Coastguard received a broken radio call from the skipper of the FV Lady Doreen who had engine trouble about two miles north of Skinningrove.

The lifeboat proceeded in the direction of the Lady Doreen but came across another broken down fishing vessel, called Magnet, whilst on route. The Magnet, with three people on board, had anchored and was in a safe position so the lifeboat proceeded to find the Lady Doreen, which was about a further half mile to the northwest.

The Lady Doreen, also with three people onboard, had a broken fuel line and certainly needed a tow back to Paddy’s Hole on the River Tees. Once all this information was passed to Humber Coastguard they decided to launch Redcar lifeboat to assist.

The skipper of the Magnet thought that if he could get some power he may be able to jump start his engine and so, after making sure Lady Doreen was not in immediate danger, Staithes lifeboat passed a battery from a nearby vessel, the Blue Moon, to the Magnet. The Magnet’s engine started successfully and they continued their trip back home, also on the River Tees.

Now Staithes lifeboat returned to the Lady Doreen and began to tow her towards the Tees. At 2:50pm the tow was passed to Redcar lifeboat so that Staithes lifeboat could provide rescue cover in their area. Staithes lifeboat returned to station at 3:00pm.

Finding two boats needing assistance so close together is unusual and the situation was a little confusing to start with. Neither boat was in imminent danger and so we had time to sort out getting a battery for the Magnet before commencing the tow of Lady Doreen.
