Lifeboats Rescue Grounded Powerboat

Staithes RNLI lifeboat launched at 1:30pm on Monday afternoon to help Whitby’s inshore lifeboat with a grounded Rigid Hulled Inflatable Boat (RHIB), with two people onboard, at Sandsend Ness.

Whitby’s all weather lifeboat was already some miles out at sea towing a disabled fishing boat when the 20ft RHIB ran aground on rocks just north west of Sandsend. The crew of the RHIB fired red distress flares and Humber Coastguard requested Whitby’s inshore lifeboat to launch.

On arrival the Whitby lifeboat crew found that the RHIB’s crew had scrambled ashore and they were soon met by mobile coastguard teams. The Whitby crew were optimistic that the RHIB could be saved and this would stop others from getting into further difficulties trying to get it. They requested the help of Staithes lifeboat and so the crew were paged.

Once on scene two of the lifeboat crew were put ashore and managed to refloat the RHIB and Staithes lifeboat towed it to Whitby, arriving just after 3:00pm.

Staithes lifeboat returned safely to Staithes at 3:45pm.
