Walkers Cut Off By Tide

Staithes RNLI lifeboat went to the aid of some walkers when they became trapped by the tide at cliffs near Saltburn on Sunday afternoon.

The lifeboat had just launched to attend a service of thanks giving at Runswick Bay as part of their annual ‘Lifeboat Weekend’ celebrations when the call came in. Both the Redcar RNLI lifeboats were also launched.

The 3 walkers, a man and two women from Leeds were on holiday at Staithes and went for walk to Saltburn. It is believed that they were not familiar with the local tides and became cut off by the rising water.

Staithes lifeboat arrived on scene but because of the rocky shore line it was easier wait for the smaller Redcar D–class to go and pick up the casualties. With the walkers safe Staithes lifeboat carried on to Runswick Bay, a little late for the appointment.
