Rescue: 16 February 2008, Ref: Staithes 002 2008
Person Trapped in a Shaft

Staithes & Runswick RNLI lifeboat launched at 10:30pm on Friday night after the coastguard received reports that a person had fallen through Skinnigrove PierĀ and may be in the water.

Both Redcar lifeboats were also launched to assist in the possible search as it was dark and extremely cold. Once launched it became clear that the person had actually fallen through a grating and down an old pump shaft near the pier.

The fire brigade, police and paramedics treated and evacuated the person to hospital while the lifeboats acted as a communications link between Humber Coastguard and the local, on-scene, Coastguards.

Staithes lifeboat returned to station at 11:15pm.
