Yacht Towed to Safety
Staithes RNLI lifeboat launched at 8:20pm on Tuesday night after the 28 foot yacht Achilles II became disabled one and half miles north of the village.
The yacht’s skipper radioed the coastguard to report that his engine had failed whilst on passage to Whitby for mast repairs. The yacht‘s sail was hoisted but little head way was being made into the fresh south easterly wind.
The volunteer lifeboat crew quickly found the yacht and checked that the two men onboard were fit and well. With the light fading it was decided that the best action was to tow the yacht to Whitby.
The yacht was safely moored in Whitby soon after 10:00pm and the Staithes lifeboat returned to station at 10:30pm.
