Concern for Canoeists

Staithes & Runswick RNLI lifeboat launched at 4:00pm on Saturday afternoon after a local fishing boat suspected three canoeists might be in trouble.

The skipper of the fishing boat contacted Humber Coastguard to report that he could see three canoes off Boulby with one being towed by the other two.

The volunteer lifeboat crew launched and quickly found the canoeists. The three all claimed to be fit and well if not a little tired and that they wished to carry on to Skinningrove without any help. The lifeboat escorted them until the mobile Skinningrove coastguard team had them in their sights. All three safely made shore at Skinningrove.

The skipper of the fishing boat was quite right to call the coastguard. There was a 15 - 20 knot wind blowing with choppy seas at times. We would rather escort people to safety than be searching for them when they’ve gone missing.

— Colin Harrison, lifeboat Helmsman.

Staithes lifeboat returned to station at 5:30pm.
