Father and Daughter Cut Off by Tide

Staithes lifeboat launched at 2:45pm on Friday afternoon after a woman in Runswick Bay became concerned that her husband, nine year old daughter and pet spaniel might be cut off by the tide.

The lady informed Neil Anderson, chairman of the Staithes and Runswick RNLI lifeboat that her husband and daughter had gone for a walk beneath the cliffs but had not returned when expected. The information was passed to Humber Coastguard who then tasked Staithes RNLI lifeboat, an RAF rescue helicopter, Runswick Bay rescue boat and three local mobile coastguard teams to begin searching between Staithes and Kettleness.

On their search along the coast the Staithes volunteer lifeboat crew spotted the missing people on rocks just northwest of Runswick Bay. The Runswick Bay rescue boat was tasked to go close inshore and pick up the pair and their dog.

At 3:10pm the casualties were landed safe and well on Runswick Bay beach and were met by the coastguard teams.

The wife of the missing man did exactly the right thing in raising the alarm. The days are getting colder and there is a real risk of hypothermia setting in, particularly if you get wet. We would urge people to check the time of high tide when walking beneath the cliffs.

— Drew Baxter, a helmsman of Staithes lifeboat

Staithes lifeboat returned safely to Staithes at 3:20pm.
