Leicester Tea Shop Surprise: 26th June '08

A non-profit making tea shop situated in Leicester Magistrates Court has, for the second year running, donated £5,000 to Staithes & Runswick Lifeboat.

The shop offers refreshments to those attending court and the money raised is split between charities, chosen by those running the shop. There has been a strong affiliation between the people of Leicester and Staithes lifeboat since 2002. The Leicester RNLI fundraising branch bought the Atlantic 75 class lifeboat, “Pride of Leicester”, which is stationed at Staithes.

Last year there was a knock at the door and when I answered it I was handed a cheque for £5,000. The people explained about the tea shop and said that we were one of their chosen charities. We were obviously delighted and it was a complete surprise to us. We were even more surprised when the same thing happened earlier this year, for another £5,000! This is a fantastic amount of money to raise and we are extremely grateful.
