10th-12th August 2007:
Fantastic Lifeboat Fundraising Weekend

Staithes & Runswick RNLI Lifeboat held their annual fundraising weekend between 10 12 August. The event was a great fun filled weekend raising nearly £14,000 for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

Every year the lifeboat crew at Staithes hold a fundraising weekend with a wide range of activities and events for all the family to enjoy. The fun started on Friday night with the traditional Nightgown Parade through the cobbled streets. The main attractions were on Saturday afternoon at Staithes. The event was officially opened at 2:00pm by Preeti Desai, from Guisbrough, who was crowned Miss Great Britain in 2006.

Staithes lifeboat was joined by Redcar and Whitby lifeboats and Runswick Bay rescue boat. Staithes and Skinningrove Coastguard teams put on a cliff rescue and the lifeboat crews demonstrated rescuing people from a ‘burning’ boat in the harbour. At 10:00 pm on Saturday, following the seafront barbeque and disco, there was a fantastic firework display in the harbour.

Dave Manship, event organiser, says:
‘This year the weather was kind to us and we had a great day. As always we must thank local businesses, shops and of course the public because without their donations we wouldn’t be able to save lives at sea. The firework display was a spectacular end to a fantastic day. Every year we are amazed at how much money such a small village raises. Money is still being received and counted but at the moment we have grossed about £14,000.'

The money raised will be sent to the credited to the Staithes & Runswick branch and will go towards the day to day running of the station.

Lifeboat Day next year at Staithes & Runswick will be on Saturday 30 August (2008).
